With all the stresses of planning the “perfect”
ceremony, many people overlook the most entertaining part
of a wedding – the reception. The wedding reception
is an opportunity to celebrate your newly married status
with the people who matter most, your friends and family.
We’ve all experienced the same, tired reception: The
bride and groom dance, feed each other cake, a bouquet is
thrown, and we all sit and enjoy food and beverages while
making small talk with those assigned to our table. But
a wedding reception can be so much more than that! Many
adventurous couples opt to use this post-ceremony celebration
as an opportunity to unite their friends and family through
interactive fun and games.
Involving your guests in the marriage festivities will
not only bring your friends and family together, but will
also ensure that the day will be as memorable for them as
it is for you and your new spouse. So what is the best way
to guarantee your guests will have a great time and even
walk away with some new friends? Incorporate games into
the reception!
If you have a guest list ranging from Toddler Timmy to
Grandma Gerti, “Want It Now” is a must-have
reception game. Your DJ acts as a Master of Ceremonies.
He is prepared with a list of “wants,” ranging
from something as common as a man with glasses, to something
as obscure as a person wearing mismatched socks. The first
guest to reach the DJ with the “want” gets a
point for their table. The table that finishes with the
most points receives a prize.
Curious to know how well your friends and family know you?
Challenge them to prove it! Divide everyone into two teams,
and have the DJ ask questions about you and your new other
half. You’ll be the judge. Whichever team knows you
best, wins a prize; but you’re the true winner. You’ve
managed to get all of your guests interacting with one another
and enjoying the party.
If you’re looking to get your guests up and out of
their chairs, give them a new one to sit on! This game is
Musical Chairs with a twist. The men form a line and get
down on one knee (sound familiar?). When the music starts,
the women begin circling the men; when the music stops,
she must find a “seat”. If she falls off her
seat or if her seat collapses, both are eliminated. The
show continues until only two are left standing. This game
is guaranteed to get your guests talking, laughing, and
maybe even leaving with a few phone numbers, not to mention
a few bruises.
With all the strategic planning and agonizing over the
most minute details of your big day, it’s important
to make the most of your reception. By keeping your guests
entertained and on their feet, you can rest assured that
your friends and family will have as much fun as possible.
The stress is over; it’s time to enjoy your party!
Make sure your wedding is the one they’ll keep talking
about for years to come.
